Preterm birth (PTB) is a global public health problem that has significant adverse effects on neonatal mortality and morbidity.
Ninety placentas were collected from department of obstetrics and gynecology of Al Yarmook Teaching Hospital and Al Khadhraa Private Hospital for normal vaginal delivery, and divided into control group of term delivery(n=30) (37 to 40 weeks) and group of preterm delivery up to 36 weeks, half of them (n=30) were belonged to preterm delivery (alive neonate) the other half (n=30) were belonged to preterm delivery (still birth).
This study aims to assess the expression of Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) inthe placental tissue from women with spontaneous term and preterm delivery using immunohistochemistry (IHC) technique .
Results revealed the mean immunoreactivity score (IRS) values of TNF-α in the villous trophoblast (6.714±2.158) and syncytial knots (3.179±1.765) of preterm delivery (still birth) placenta were significantly higher (P<0.05) as compared to preterm delivery (alive neonate) placenta (5.851±2.444),(2.777±1.476) and term delivery placenta (5.130±2.074), (2.043±1.296) respectively, while the mean IRS values of TNF-α in the decidual cells (6.107±2.859) of preterm delivery (still birth) placenta were highly significant (P<0.005) as compared to preterm delivery (alive neonate) placenta (5.851±3.134) and term delivery placenta (4.087±2.968) respecti.
