Abstract EN

The main aim of this study was to evaluate the performance and competitiveness of the Libyan commodity exports in foreign markets over the period of 2001-2015.

In order to achieve the study targets a descriptive analytical approach was adopted.

In terms of the measuring tools, the study has used nine of the most widely used indicators, which are Export Growth in value, Value of Net Exports, Per Capita Exports, Share in National Exports, Intra-Industry Trade ITT, Correspondence Index "COSINE", Revealed Comparative Advantage "RCA", and Market Share "MS".

The main findings of the study illustrated that the Libyan exports has achieved a considerable level of growth, and positive value of net exports.

However, they are highly concentrated in the oil-gas sector.

In addition, the most significant destination of the Libyan exports was the EU28 market.

Moreover, the results of the COSINE indicator represented that the Libyan exports has achieved a reasonable level of trade corresponding with some of the regional economic groups, such as COMISA, APEC, Maghreb Union and EU28.

The results of the comparative advantage index "RCA" showed that the Libyan exports has a Revealed Comparative Advantage in only two trade sections, which are the mineral products and the products of the chemical or allied industries.

Furthermore, the market share of the Libyan exports was very weak, with values of not more than 0.02.

The study recommendations concentrated on the necessity of the structural and geographical diversification of the Libyan exports.

As well as, It recommended that the regional economic agreements should be activated.
