English Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a computer assisted language program (Rosetta Stone) on developing the reading skills of the eighth grade students in Jordan.

The study tried to answer the following questions: 1.

What is the effect of using a computer assisted language program (CALP) on the reading skills of the eighth grade students? .

Is there a difference in the effect of using a computer assisted language program (CALP) on the reading skills of the eighth grade students due to the level of students on the pre-test? The sample of the study consisted of (40) students from the basic eighth grade students during the second semester of the academic year 2015/2016, in AL-Sarh schools in Amman.

The participants were assigned into two groups: (20) students represented the control group and (20) students represented the experimental group.

This study used a quasi-experimental design where the sample was a purposive sample, and the duration of the experiment was two months.

Both groups (experimental and control) underwent pretests on reading skills, to determine their level before the start of the experiment.

The control group was instructed using the traditional methods of teaching, while the experimental group was trained to use the (CALP) chosen for this study (Rosetta Stone).

After two months of the process, both groups were tested.

The pre- and post -test were administered after assuring validity and reliability.

The two tests were corrected by the researcher and another colleague for reliability of rating.

The data collected was analyzed by using means, percentages, and t-test.

Results showed that there was an effect of using CALP on the students’ reading skills, but they are lower than expectation, which answered the first question of the study.

The results showed also that the students with low results on the pretest got better results on the posttest than the high achievers.

The researcher recommends using a computerized program, (Rosetta Stone) worked as a helpful teaching technique specially in teaching reading, but it might require more training for teachers for merging CALP into classroom techniques
