Abstract EN

This study was carried out to determine the concentration of some heavy metals Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd in tissue of four imported commercially Species varied in feeding types Pagellus bellottii, Sardinella aurita, Siganus rivulatus, Caranx crysos available in Syria Strip markets, to evaluate the possible risk associated with their consumption.

The levels of heavy metals were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry after digestion of the samples using microwave.

There were great variations among heavy metal levels in the tissue of the study fish species.

There is no significant difference in back ground levels Copper and Zinc in four fish species.

Sardinella aurita accumulated the highest levels of Ni (2.95 μg/g wet weight), the highest levels of Pb were detected in Caranx crysos (0.07 μg/g wet weight).

While the highest levels of Cd were detected in Siganus rivulatus (0.04 μg/g wet weight).

The results also showed that the concentrations of heavy metals in fish tissue were variable significantly depending on the type of tissue, and the element studied.

None of the values in the addible tissue (muscle) of, Pagellus bellottii, Siganus rivulatus, Caranx crysos, exceeded defined safe limits by the international organizations, with the exception of Nickel concentrate in the muscles of Sardinella aurita (3.07 μg/g wet weight) , which exceeded the standard set by the World Health Organization and food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and therefore causes a threat to consumer health.

Therefore it can be concluded that no problems on human health would be raised at present from the consumption of commercial fish available in the Syrian markets with the exception of Sardinella aurita health problems.
