English Abstract

This study investigates the roadside lead pollution at four different locations in Gaza city.

Road dust continues to be a major potential reservoir of lead (Pb) pollution in the urban environment as it is a potential hazard to human.

A total of sixteen (16) road dust samples deposited on leaves collected along the selected streets of different traffic volumes in the Gaza city were analyzed for Pb concentration.

In addition, samples of soil near the selected streets were also collected and determined for Pb content.

Result showed that the maximum lead concentrations deposited on the leaves was 123 mg / kg, found along the EL-Wehda street.

Similarly, the highest Pb concentration of 12 mg / kg in the soil sample was also found at EL-Wehda street.

Significant correlation coefficients (0.87 < R < 0.99)were found between the traffic volume and lead concentrations deposited on the leaves, for all streets.

In addition, a significant correlation was also found between the lead in roadside soil samples and the lead deposited on the leaves, ranged 0.40 < R < 0.60.

The finding suggests that the lead concentration in soil and deposited on leaves are dependent on the volume of traffic plying along the studied area.

The study recommends that a regular monitoring and assessment on possible exposure of lead to the public to be carried out in the future.
