English Abstract

Muslims minority of Nepal migrated from different geographical locations since the 15th century have been practicing their cultural and religious activities including building of new mosques freely only after enactment of new Civil Code in 1963.

A detailed comparative analysis of two existing mosques namely ‘Jame Masjid ’ of Kathmandu and ‘Masjid’ at Trishuli Bazzar, Bidur reveals that they are the venue for practising Islam with Muslim community’s high sentimental value and attachment.

However, numerous emerging problems and potential of mosque development in new secular Nepal can not be addressed through the existing legal and institutional framework as well as various social organisation associated with Muslims.

Hence, a threefold strategy of developing mosques as Islamic cultural and community centre, formulating architectural design guidelines for planning and construction of mosques and strengthening cooperation and coordination with local neighbours and international Muslim community is suggested.

Research, development and publication in this field is essential not only to propagate the philosophy of Islamic culture and its relevancy in modern society but also to incorporate Islamic culture as new vocabulary in Nepalese architecture, which will ultimately be a source of inspiration for other religious groups in secular Nepal.
