English Abstract
The conservation of Mediterranean historic cities should be a priority not only for their local administration, but also for the global bodies at large.
It is well known that the conservation of these cities is not an easy task due to the hard challenges they face.
And because of the very special nature of the Mediterranean historic centers as important tourist destinations, revitalization projects have a heavy burden.
Historically, several approaches have been applied for dealing with revitalization of historic city centers.
They have represented an orthodox conservation approach looking at the architectural heritage as a static bulk of stones need technical interference to preserve them in a statue-like conditions.
Such approaches not only damage the continuity of these stones but also jeopardize the urban life around them.
This research developed a more comprehensive and holistic approach to the revitalization process that engage all the important aspects of the revitalization process in one complete package.
These aspects are Generative- Adaptive-Participatory- Responsive- Reuse of historic city centers and it is abbreviated : GAPRU.
Two case studies have been used to illustrate the importance of GAPRU.
The first one is Gaza Old Town, Palestine where the absence of GAPRU has led to the complete transformation of it from a jewel of architectural heritage in Palestine to a mere devastated district of ugly concrete structures.
None the less, GAPRU has been recently applied to revitalize the very few surviving historical buildings and their surroundings.
The second is the historic center of Naples, Italy which suffers several serious problems in its urban heritage environment.
This research raises the alert that GAPRU is crucially needed to be applied in order to avoid serious deterioration and transformation in its urban heritage.
