English Abstract
Unreinforced Masonry (URM) buildings with historic values are regional cultural assets worth preserving they are an important part of our cultural heritage.
Recent earthquakes around the world demonstrated the power of nature and the catastrophic impact of such power upon urban cities.
The design technologies and building materials and methods that went into the original construction of URM buildings are often drastically different from their contemporary counterparts, accordingly earthquakes damages associated with older buildings, are more than that for newer buildings.
This led to badly need to retrofitting processes for these buildings.
The retrofit process is a general term that may consist of a variety of treatments, including : preservation, rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction.
Different conventional retrofitting techniques are available to increase the strength and / or ductility of URM walls.
This paper reviews common conventional techniques used in retrofitting of existing URM buildings, these methods are ; surface treatments, grout and epoxy injection, external reinforcement, confining URM using reinforced concrete tie columns, and finally center core technique.
In the same context the procedures, advantages, disadvantages, limitations, effect of each retrofitting technique are discussed.
Although the feasibility of applying the conventional moethods has been assessed through this paper, it is difficult to make direct comparisons regarding the structural performance of the techniques.
