English Abstract

Morocco has shown real commitment through its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) to reduce its Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 32% until 2030.

Although the efforts are mainly focused on the energy sector, other interesting greenhouse gas abatement options can be found in sustainable water resource management.

This study evaluates the potentials in the Water-Energy Nexus supporting the Moroccan water management policy.

This work is an attempt to highlight and visualize the renewable energy and associated GHG abatement potential in waste water treatment and demonstrate by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) how this sector can support sustainable energy production strategies.

The GHG abatement potentials in terms of methane recovery from natural treatment ponds on a national level are evaluated using an approved small scale Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) methodology.

The results identify considerable economic benefits from implementing a suggested strategy that would allow both the energetic valorization of methane emissions from treatment ponds and the reduction of the GHG emissions associated with the process.

Put in numbers, the strategy would mitigate 312 kt of CO2e GHG emissions and produce 50 GWh of electricity annually with a competitive levelized cost of electricity of 1.15 MAD.kWhelec-1.
