English Abstract

The scope of this paper is to have a feasibility study on decentralized, renewable-oriented energy supply systems suitable for Gaza conditions which suffers from an electrical energy shortage.

Generally, energy self-sufficiency is one of the objectives of energy directives for buildings.

Since Gaza is a sun-enriched region with an average irradiance of 6 kWh / m2 / day on tilted 31 degrees, solar-based systems, solar thermal solution might be very practical in that region at residential level.

For electricity generation, thermoelectric generators (TEG) will be used to benefit from heating and cooling system’s surplus potential.

For many years Photovoltaic systems (PV) has been applied for clean electricity generation, however, its efficiency decreases in high temperature.

As Gaza is located in a warm region with annual average temperature of 20 °C, TEG’s performance is very interesting to investigate.

The TEG has no complex parts, movement-independent, and it is maintenance free.

The objective of this study is to reduce the use of fossil fuel based energy sources by increasing the renewable sources share, especially in air-conditioning systems which is the largest consumer of energy in the various sectors and applications, and to reduce the proportion of harmful gases such as Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels used in electricity generation.

The novelty of this paper is proposing a system that combines two forms of energy, thermal for cooling and heating and electric for domestic appliances based on a solar thermal collector.

The combined system is useful for solving the power shortage in Gaza.

Finally, a comparison is carried out between solar thermal collector and PV based system and simulation results have shown the superiority of the solar thermal collector over PV based systems.
