English Abstract

Paper presents the current role, relevance and trends in respect of JIT philosophy application in production and manufacturing organizations in general and constructional sector in particular.

It gives an overview of the current state of art to show that how in the face of growing global competitiveness most of construction organizations, are deriving the benefits of the technique even by mere implementing some of the ideas adopted by Just-in-Time (JIT) philosophy.

It demonstrates that how the technique is helpful in designing a philosophy to tap capacity to build and deliver services and goods as needed, using minimal inventories and storage spaces, and help achieve a continuous improvement in total productivity through the entire organizations.

Finally some findings from six interesting case studies (three in steel erection & thee large bore pipeline erection) show that JIT technique application has beneficial impact mainly in certain components of the construction industry which are having proximity to the manufacturing process like concrete batching and delivery, steel erection, precast factory, asphalt plant, pipe prefabrication facilities etc.

Paper also highlights that why and how present day E-business intensive construction industry needs to preplan and replan their construction plants / sites on a daily basis.

It demonstrates that JIT benefits generally found in manufacturing are equally possible for certain components of construction industry too in terms of reducing inventory levels and storage spaces, increasing productivity, improving quality and responsiveness, reducing lead times, and eliminating the all kinds of waste at all levels.
