English Abstract

This research incorporates finite element method as a design method to construct a model to simulate a layer of portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement.

The main objective of this research is to achieve an economical section of a rigid highway slab using the Mechanical-empirical (M-E) approach.

The model simulates thin slabs of PCC poured on a subgrade or base-course using SAP2000 V10 as a tool.

It consists of shell elements 7.2x7.2 m of rigid slab representing two highway lanes, the slab is divided into 144 elements with 169 nods supported by spring layer, the main input parameters used are those used by the traditional empirical methods including the compressive strength of PCC, modulus of subgrade reaction as a spring layer, and number of 18 kip equivalent single Axle Load repetition (ESAL) as independent moving load.

In the analysis of the model, measurements of slab thickness are incorporated considering limiting strain at the bottom of the concrete layer as criterion.

The output data was used to establish linear correlation between number of ESAL repetition, modulus of subgrade reaction (k), and compressive strength of concrete with the required thickness of rigid concrete pavement slabs as the dependant variable.
