English Abstract
This study aims to develop increasingly reliable semi-empirical methods for the assessment of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading.
The scope of this study includes three stages : i) the compilation of liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading data from available earthquake case histories, ii) the identification of the geometrical, geotechnical, seismological, and probabilistic descriptive modeling variables, and iii) the employment of advanced analysis techniques for developing semi-empirical models that best explain the compiled lateral spreading case histories.
After careful filtering of the compiled lateral spreading case histories - for data quality and completeness points of views -the number of case histories is reduced down to 526 liquefaction-induced lateral spreading data points from 18 different earthquakes.
By employing advanced assessment techniques, new sets of semi-empirical models are developed addressing the effects of : i) triggered site boundary conditions, ii) seismic soil liquefaction triggering, iii) inertial forces acting during earthquakes, and iv) gravitational forces acting before, during, and after earthquakes, on the seismic liquefaction-induced lateral ground spreading phenomenon.
The resultant models were developed for sloping sites with and without free-face, and level sites with free-face boundary conditions enabling to model all sources of uncertainties in the estimation of the magnitude of seismic liquefaction-induced lateral ground deformations.
