English Abstract

In this paper we design an Internet Packet Monitoring System (IPMS) that runs in Microsoft Windows environment.

IPMS is a multi-threaded Java-based application that uses WinPcap industry standard tool and JPCap (Java Packet Capture).

IPMS is a passive packet monitoring tool that can sniff, capture and save computer network packets crossing network interface cards (NICs) in both wired and wireless networks at any network layer.

It can analyze these packets, parse them into their fields and generate statistical data about them.

Statistical data is then saved in log files for offline analysis and simulation.

IPMS is used for network troubleshooting, intrusion detection, network management, wiretapping and hacking.

IPMS could be used by the Internet service providers (ISPs) as a benchmarking tool to analyze and measure the performance of their networks.

We demonstrate IPMS's capabilities by running diversity of experiments.

These experiments were conducted at an IT company based in Gaza.

They included showing captured packet details at different network layer levels, packet monitoring of four personal computers that were used by different employees with different administrative tasks, and packet monitoring of the server machine of the same company.

These packets were monitored at different network layers and for different protocols.

Results of these experiments prove the correctness, effectiveness and usefulness of IPMS.
