English Abstract
The inclusion of a soft storey in multistory reinforced concrete buildings is a feature that is gaining widespread popularity in urban areas where land cost is exorbitant and horizontal space is a rare commodity.
In earthquake prone zones this feature has been observed in post earthquake investigation.
Although engineering judgment is well prepared to accept the notion that a soft storey poses a weak link in earthquake resistant design, yet the idea still demands better in depth understanding.
The following study illustrates through a detailed example the explicit weakness and the importance of the judicious distribution of shear walls along the facades of buildings.
The building selected is analyzed through a wide spectrum of numerical models which addressed, in an exhaustive manner, the structural behavior of reinforced concrete framed structures.
The parameters discussed include the fundamental period of vibration, lateral displacements as well as shear and bending moment.
It is noticed that an abrupt change in stiffness value between the soft storey and the level above is responsible for increasing the strength demand on first storey columns and thus needs to be totally avoided in earthquake prone zones.
Extending the elevator shafts throughout the soft storey is a recommendation that is worth to be observed.
