Abstract EN

This research was performed to study the effect of topical application of honey on hamester full thickness skin open wounds in comparison with iodine solution 2%.

Experiment animals were divided into three groups each one consists of ten hamesters.

Groups were designed as follows: group one was left as control, group two was treated with natural honey.

The last group was treated iodine solution 2%.

Under general anesthesia, one 1X1 cm2 full skin thickness was surgically removed from hamester's backs near the backbone.

All experimental materials were applied on created wounds once a day.

Wounds then were covered with sterile gauze, bonded up with another sterile gauze, then cover with adhesive tape.

The structural changes were documented by picturing wound every three days up to wound healing.

The results showed that honey accelerated wound contraction and healing in comparison with iodine solution 2%.

During 23 days all wounds were healed at the control group, and 15 days for the second group treated by natural honey, and 17 days for the third group treated with iodine solution.

In addition, honey reduced scar formation in comparison with iodine solution.

Wound healing was better with honey dressings as compared to iodine dressings.
