English Abstract
The usage of self-compacting concrete has expanded after its discovery in 1989, because of its high performance fresh properties and flowability, where it can be casted in places where congested reinforcement without causing honey-combing.
The objective of this study is to examine the impact of using recycled aggregate on the fresh and hardened mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC).
As a first step a development of a suitable mix for SCC using recycled aggregate that satisfy the EFNARC [1] requirements was carried out.
Then the fresh properties of the mix, slump flow test, V-funnel test and L-box test, were tested.
Finally the mechanical properties of hardened concrete, compressive strength, tensile strength and flexure strength were evaluated.
In this study 12 trial mixes divided into two phases were conducted, the first phase is to find the optimal percentage of coarse recycled aggregate (R.A.) by changing its percentage with a step of 20 % for each trial.
Five mixed with 20 %, 40 %, 60 %, 80 % and 100 % of coarse recycled aggregate as a replacement of natural aggregate was investigated.
The trial with R.A.
percentage of 60 % was found to be the mix with maximum percentage of R.A that satisfies the requirements of the fresh properties of SCC according to EFNARC [1] standards for self-compacted concrete.
In the second phase the effect of changing water / cement ratio (w / c ratio) was studied, where three ratios (0.5, 0.55, and 0.6) was used.
The optimal value of the w / c ratio for mix with 60% R.A as a replacement of the natural course aggregate was found to be 0.55.
Also the effect of silica fume on the fresh properties of SCC was investigated.
Three mixes with silica fume percentages of (5 %, 9 %, and 15 %) and using 60 % R.A.
were considered.
The most suitable value of silica fume percentage that satisfies the requirements of EFNARC (2002) standards was found to be 9 %
