English Abstract

Rejection of sodium and potassium chloride is an important factor that determines the efficiency of nanofiltration membranes that are applied to desalinate brackish water.

In Gaza, where ground water is characterized by 500-700 mg / l Chloride concentration ; it is essential to remove or reduce such concentration to meet WHO and Palestinian Water Standards (PWS).

Therefore, two commercial nanofiltration membranes, denoted as NF-1 and ASP30 respectively, were investigated in terms of their abilities to reject NACL and KCl.

Flux and rejection of these two membranes at 2g / l concentration were studied.

Rejection of NF-1 membrane to NACL and KCl reached up to 44% and 37 % respectively.

ASP30 membrane found to have lower rejection for both salts (33 % and 32 % respectively).

Flux of NACL and KCl salts were almost the same for the NF-1 membrane (about 71 L.m-2.h-1).

ASP30 membrane found to have higher flux than NF-1 membrane for NACL and KCl salts (131 and 122 L.m-2.h-1 respectively).

Such data could be helpful to determine the significance of applying these membranes in desalinating of Gaza ground water.
