English Abstract

Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETS) is an assortment of wireless creates a temporal network between mobile nodes without any help of a centralized administrator.

The characteristics of an ad-hoc network can be explored on the base of routing protocols.

The dynamic topology and node mobility is the critical characteristic in which nodes frequently change their position.

Ad-hoc network such as mobile smart phones and laptops suffer from limited resources like battery power and bandwidth.

Thus, the control traffic is to be minimized, which is the main responsibility of routing protocols used to select the shortest path.

Several ad-hoc routing protocols have been implemented, however position-based routing protocols can sufficiently improve performance, scalability, mobility and energy efficiency of ad-hoc networks.

This work aims to find an optimal routing protocol achieving the best performance within all environmental conditions.

Therefore, this work intensively studies the position-based routing protocols using literature study and empirical analysis by (NS2) simulator.

The analysis study carried in this work focused on a set of performance metrics including; delay, throughput, PDR and power consumption.

Three major simulation scenarios were implemented in a new hierarchical strategy, considering different terrain areas, different density of nodes and mobility speed in order to find the best protocol achieving best performance in the worst network size ,density and mobility.

Results of this analysis study were investigated to select optimal protocol features achieving best performance metrics in all possible ad-hoc network environments.

Afterwards, selected features are enhanced to introduce future position based routing protocol.

During research methodology LAR protocol presented the best performance metrics results, while DREAM introduced the best average energy consumption respect different scenarios
