English Abstract

Tannur Dam is one of the constructed Dams in Jordan during the period 1999-2002, cited 150km south of Amman on WadiHasa, as a water reserving system with a reservoir capacity of 17 million m3.

Several significant aims are targeted in this project include: maximizing and regulating the use of the affected water resources, to help increase agricultural production, provide employment and generate additional income from both industry and tourism.

However, the type of sediments in the area always introduces a new challenge regarding the type of metal ions that might be dissolved in water and cause a serious contamination problem due to their toxicity when they reach beyond their accepted concentration.

According to the aforementioned possibility of these ions in Tannur Dam water and sediments we have designed this study to assess the existence of some heavy metals, group ions and radioactive elements in the water and sediment in the Dam.

In the following step, we have evaluated the physical properties of water as affected by the above categories.

The heavy metals include: Fe, Mn, Cr, Zn, Pb and Cu, the group ions are (F-, Cl-, NO2 -, Br-, NO3 -, PO4 -3, SO4 -2) and the radioactive elements are Uranium-238,Thorium-232, Radium-226 , Radium-228 andPotassium-40.

The assessment procedure was developed by using several techniques such as ion chromatography (IC), atomic absorption spectroscopy(AAS), gama spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence.

The water samples were collected during March and August 2016 to ensure the differences upon the climate changes from Tannur Dam.

The determined physical properties are pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, total dissolved salts, total hardness.

The significant outcome in this study revealed that there are an elevated level of PO4 -3 and Fe in the water and sediments which might be attributed to the location of the Dam nearby the Phosphate area.

The other measured heavy metals, group ions and radioactive elements and their presence concentration in the study samples are listed and discussed in the body of this work.
