Abstract EN
Patients with chronic renal failure CRF suffer from lipid abnormalities, changes in the level of oxidative stress status, and hyperhomocysteine, and these accelerate the development of atherosclerosis.
The aim of the present study to evaluate the alteration of the serum lipid profile, oxidative stress status and plasma total homocysteine t-Hcy in CRF patients pre- and post-hemodialysis.
The study included 80 patients, 36 women (45%) and 44 men (55%) in end stage renal disease ESRD patients requiring maintenance hemodialysis, and 40 subjects as control group.
There is a significant increase in serum total cholesterol and triglycerides in CRF patients pre-dialysis compared as control subjects.
They were decreased after hemodialysis.
There is a significant decrease in the levels of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol HDL-C in CRF patients pre- and post-hemodialysis when compared to control subjects.
The levels of low density lipoprotein-cholesterol LDL-C and very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol VLDL-C were significantly increased before hemodialysis compared to controls, they were non significantly decreased after hemodialysis.
Serum malondialdehyde MDA was significantly increased in CRF patients pre- and post-hemodialysis compared to controls.
Total antioxidant capacity TAC levels were significantly decreased in CRF patients pre- and post-hemodialysis compared to controls.
The total homocysteine t-Hcy was significantly increased in CRF patients pre- and post-hemodialysis compared to controls, they were decreased after hemodialysis.
