English Abstract
-This study aims at investigating the problems that undergraduate students face when they negate English sentences.
It has been realized that the students face serious problems when dealing with negation.
A test that consists of 30 English sentences was distributed to 50 undergraduate students in their first year at the Department of English Language and Literature at Mu’tah University.
The analysis of their answers reveals that the targeted sample faces considerable difficulties in the usage of negation.
One of the problems is the usage of the auxiliary Do in negation.
Students commit errors in choosing the correct auxiliary, or in the agreement between the subject and the auxiliary verb.
In addition, a noticeable problem was using the negative particle ‘not’ without any auxiliary verb.
Furthermore, there are errors in the usage of modals, assertive expressions and adverbs in negation constructions.
Since negation is an essential structure in language and highly rich, further studies are recommended about this topic to enrich the existence knowledge in this field.
