English Abstract
Background: Postpartum period is considered to be the time from birth up to six weeks.
It is considered the most critical and sensitive period.
Significant changes in father’s life occur during this period, and many factors affect father during postpartum period.
However, little is known about the experience of first time fathers of this period in Jordan.
Aim: To explore postpartum experience of Jordanian first time fathers.
Design/Method: An exploratory qualitative design was used.
A Semistructured interview method was conducted with a purposively selected (n=10) first time fathers from Mutah University in Jordan.
The data were collected between October 2016 and December 2016.
Findings: The mean age of study participant was 31 years old, who had different educational levels.
Thematic analysis was conducted for data analysis.
Two main themes are emerged: 1) being a father and 2) from husband and wife to family plus one.
Each theme had two sub-categories; first theme has: being relieved and being puzzled.
The second theme has two subcategories: A new to me and influencing factors.
The overall experience of the fathers during the postpartum was complex and culturally shaped.
