English Abstract

Background In spite of the benefits of storing umbilical cord stem cells, literature suggested that health care professionals have inadequate knowledge concerning umbilical cord blood.

In addition, data regarding knowledge and attitudes toward umbilical cord blood among health care providers who are living in the Middle East Region are rare.

Aim The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of an educational intervention regarding umbilical cord banking on the knowledge and attitude among health care providers in south region of Jordan.

Methods A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design was used.

A sample 55 nurses and midwives were recruited from Al- Karak city which located in south region .The participants have been attended an educational program regarding umbilical cord banking, The knowledge and attitude regarding umbilical cord banking of the participants were assessed pre the intervention, post the intervention and after three months .

Results The results suggest that participants had inadequate knowledge (mean knowledge = 4.87, SD = 3.79) and neutral attitude toward the umbilical cord blood banking (Mean attitude = 37.69, SD = 4.16) before the intervention.

Immediately after completing the educational intervention, participants demonstrated an improvement in their knowledge and attitude toward umbilical cord blood banking, p-value <0.001.

The participants after three months of the intervention were still having better knowledge and attitude toward the umbilical cord blood banking.

Conclusion The results suggest that participants had inadequate knowledge and unsteady attitude toward the umbilical cord blood banking before the intervention.

Implementing well-structured educational intervention was helpful for nurses and midwives to gain better knowledge and attitude toward the umbilical cord blood banking.

Implications for practice The finding highlighted the importance of the establish training and educational intervention related to umbilical cord banking and to develop nurses‟ knowledge, attitudes and practices in order to fit newly developed concepts of care.
