English Abstract

This study was intended to evaluate the changes in biochemical parameters and the anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan induced paw edema in adult rat offspring after prenatal oral administration ethanolic extracted of Salvia triloba plant and/or cigarettes smoke exposure.

White albino rats were divided into four groups; control group(1), prenatally ethanolic extract treated group(2), prenatally cigarette smoke exposed group(3) and prenatally ethanolic extract treated group exposed to cigarette smoke (4).

Mothers have been treated orally 375 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of Salvia triloba and/or cigarette smoke exposure at (3time/2 cigarette/day) during the period of pregnancy.

For anti-inflammatory activity test, all groups were injected (intradermal) with 0.1 ml of 1% lambda carrageenan, and the degree of paw edema was assessed.

In adult male rat offspring; glucose level was significantly increased in group 4.However, urea, cholesterol, LDL, iron level and cholesterol /HDL Ratio were significantly decreased in groups 2,3 and 4, creatinine level significantly decreased in group 2.

HDL, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin, globulin and calcium level were significantly decreased in groups 2 and 4.

In adult female rat offspring; albumin level was significantly increased in group 2, globulin level was significantly increased in group 4, however glucose level and cholesterol /HDL Ratio were significantly decreased in groups 2 and 3, AST level was significant decreased in groups 2,3 and 4.

alkaline phosphatase, amylase level were significantly decreased in group 4.

total bilirubin significant decreased on group 2, as compared to control group.

On the other hand the inhibition of carrageenan induced rat paw edema was significantly decreased in groups 2,3 and 4 as compared to control paw (saline).

It is concluded that prenatal ethanolic extract of salvia triloba treated and/or cigarette smoke exposure were induced significant changes in some serum biochemical parameters of the adult rat offspring.

In addition prenatal ethanolic extract of salvia triloba treated and/or cigarette smoke exposure showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in adult rat offspring rat skin.
