English Abstract

Integrating commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components to build new software systems continues to be one of the fastest growing methods in system development.

Several studies show that COTS-based systems exceeding 40% of the total developed software systems.

Thus, a model that ensures quality characteristics of such systems becomes a necessity.

Consequently, the main objective of this contribution is to build a new quality model dedicated to COTS-based reuse.

In this work a comparative analysis has been carried out on existing software quality models, and the outcome shows that none of those available models dedicated for evaluating COTS-based components Therefore, the process of evaluating and selecting such products is still a challenge because of the "black box" nature of COTS components, the rapid change in marketplace and the requirement flexibility.

In addition, this thesis provides a review of several existing methods used for selecting COTS components, and outlines their disadvantages with respect to our new model.

The newly introduced model has been further enhanced through expanding its quality attributes and defining metrics to measure these attributes.

Finally, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been applied to the model as a decision-making tool in order to carryout an empirical study, aiming at verifying the efficiency of the model.

In the empirical study, two alternative database systems have been evaluated, and the outcome is promising; the enhanced model succeeded in evaluating and projecting the winning database according to user-requirement
