A corporate entity, which is a customer of an Islamic bank, had deposited an amount in a term deposit account for a period of three years on the basis of Mudarabah. However, upon completion of one year it has decided to break the deposit and withdraw the funds available in its term deposit account. Shariah guidance is sought if it is permissible for the bank to accept the request of the customer, keeping in perspective the fact that the bank has multiple categories of term deposit accounts based on tenors such as six months, one year, two years and three years, and each category has different weightage points to be used for ascertaining the eligible profit. It is also to be noted that an amount based on the ‘on account profit’ is distributed to all term deposit holders quarterly, based on expected profit from the investment of Mudarabah capital, and the same is adjusted upon calculation of the actual profit at the end of the relevant Mudarabah period.
