A group of conventional and Islamic participating banks entered into a syndication to provide financing for a large project through an Islamic facility to be provided through an Islamic bank acting as an investment agent

Fatawa Question

A group of conventional and Islamic participating banks entered into a syndication to provide financing for a large project through an Islamic facility to be provided through an Islamic bank acting as an investment agent. Although the majority of the participating banks committed to fund the project in us dollars but a few of the participating banks committed to fund in euro. Shariah guidance is sought as to two levels : Firstly, whether it is permissible for Islamic banks to enter into a syndicated facility with conventional banks to provide financing for a project ; secondly, how the funding through the syndicated facility could be structured considering the fact that few of the participating banks have committed to fund in a non-transaction currency (i.e. Euro).
