English Abstract
This study explores and identifies the difficulties and problems that face Arabic majors at Mu’tah University when translating oriental texts from English into Arabic.
The present thesis uncovers the main problems of translation that are caused by the oriental texts course, and identifies the procedures followed by the students to handle these problems and difficulties.
The study adopted Newmark’s ‘Communicative and Semantic Theory’ of translation (1981), as well as Baker’s ‘Equivalence in Translation Theory’ (1992).
The collected data from the questionnaires and the interviews were analyzed statistically by using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) program, version (11.5).
The study revealed that the students face several problems and difficulties in translating oriental texts from English into Arabic.
Problems like the ambiguity of meaning, equivalence, and the cultural differences between Arabic and English are some of these problems that face students.
These problems and difficulties are due to their weak background in the English language as well as the difficulty of the texts themselves.
To overcome these difficulties, it is recommended that students should be trained in translation by studying two English courses, as well as studying a course in translation before studying the oriental course.
