English Abstract

This study investigates some possible functions that the phenomenon of code switching reveals and the reasons native speakers of Jordanian Arabic students at Mu'tah University switch from Arabic to English and the functions of switching.

In an attempt to arrive at the functions of code switching and the motivations behind it, the researcher recorded and observed real conversations performed by different groups of students of medicine.

A questionnaire intended at eliciting students' responses was also administered and distributed among students of medicine at Mu'tah University.

The data show that code switching is generally used as a strategy for various reasons that carry pragmatic implications.

Subjects, for example, switch to English either to increase the communication or to decrease the social distance among participants.

They also tend to switch codes between Arabic and English in order to match the sequence of talk, to emphasize a direct previous message, and to show an agreement with a certain proposition.

Other reasons of switching include: a) to improve their English proficiency; b) to replace Arabic words that are considered taboo as English words seem less offensive; c) to use English habitually; d) to deliver the message briefly
