English Abstract
This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the levels and types of questions available in the secondary stage English language textbooks used in Jordan during the academic year 2011-2012.
The purpose of the analysis was to determine the distribution of the questions over the six levels of the cognitive domain, the three domains of Bloom’s taxonomy (cognitive, affective and psychomotor), as well as the distribution of lower and higher cognitive level questions.
The sample of the study consisted of four eleventh and twelfth English language textbooks where the researcher analyzed (755) questions.
To achieve the purpose of the study, a question analysis sheet was prepared and used in the classification of the questions according to Bloom’s taxonomy.
The results of the study revealed the following: 1) Most of the questions were within the first two levels; comprehension and knowledge(66%) but less proportion of questions were within the other cognitive levels (29%) which reflected the preponderance of the low level questions in the four investigated textbooks.
2) The low emphasis on affective domain questions (5%) in comparison with cognitive domain questions (95%) but the absence of questions within the psychomotor domain.
3) No statistical significant differences at (p ≤ 0.05) were reported between high and low level questions due to grade.
In light of the results, the researcher recommended the necessity for more training to improve the questioning techniques of the English language teachers to compensate for the deficiency in the quality of the textbook questions.
There is also a call for the Ministry of Education to revise and upgrade the low level questions in the new editions of the existing English textbooks and to incorporate more questions in the affective and psychomotor domains.
Finally, the researcher recommended conducting similar studies in the area of the basic stage English language textbooks in Jordan
