English Abstract

The biodegradation of chlorobenzoate compounds was investigated using different bacterial strains.

Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, E.

coli strain VHb transformed with Vitreoscilla vgb gene ,E.

coli wild type, and E.

coli carrying a pUC9 plasmid.

The Minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of the chlorobenzoic compounds was found 1.5M for E.

aerogenes, 0.2M for K.

pneumoniae, 1.5M for S.

aureus, 0.5M for P.

aeruginosa, 1.5M for B.

subtilis.

The optimum conditions for growth of all strains were found to be at temperature 37oC, agitation rate 250 rpm and pH7.

Addition of yeast extract to the MSM medium was also found to be appropriate condition for the chloride production.

The concentration of chlorobenzoate at which the degradation is the highest was found to be 3.5 mM for all bactrial strains.

Most bacterial strain were found to use benzoic acid and chlorobenzoic compounds as a source of carbon.

However, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae were found the most efficient in the biodegradation of chlorobenzoate.

The chloride production was also investigated and It was found that the chloride production was increased as chlorobenzoate biodegradation increased.
