English Abstract

Corynebacterium auris bacteria was found to use 3-CBA as a sole source of carbon.

The biodegradation ability was monitored through the disappearance of the substrate, the release of chloride and the growth of bacterial cells.

The highest percentage of biodegradation at the standard conditions with 3mM substrate concentration is 67% after 80h of incubation.

However, the percentage of degradation increased to 81% at the adaptation conditions using 3mM 3-CBA concentration in the growth medium.

Adaptation of the cells on 3-CBA for 48 hours and cells starvation for 48 hours increased significantly the initial degradation rate.

The percentage of degradation of 3-CBA by Corynebacterium auris varied enormously according to the conditions of culture and the substrate concentration in the medium.

The initial rates of biodegradation ranged from 40 to 83 μM/h according to the conditions of growth at the 3mM substrate concentration.

The two carbon sources used in this study enhanced the biodegradation.

The percentage of degradation of 3mM 3- CBA by Corynebacterium auris using glucose and sucrose as second carbon source in the medium were 73% and 77% respectively.

The chlorine release was in accordance with the biodegradation of 3-CBA in all the experiments.

However, the nitrogen sources yeast extract and tryptone decreased the degradation when compared to that with the substrate only in the minimal salt medium.

The percentage of degradation using yeast extract and tryptone were 47% and 49% respectively.

The experiments included substrate concentration, temperature ,pH, carbon starvation, carbon adaptation, carbon and nitrogen sources.

The optimal concentration, temperature and pH for the strain were 3mM, 37ºC and 7pH respectively
