English Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the reactions of macrocyclic Schiff base ligands derived from the condensation of 2,6-diformylpyridine and different diamines, namely, 2,6-diaminopyridine (dap), 1,2- phenylenediamine (daPh), trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (dach) and ethylenediamine (en) with some transition metal ions using template method.

The metal ions used are Pd(II), Pt(II), Rh(III), Pd(IV), and Pt(IV).

The formula obtained for the complexes are: PdC18H18N6Br2, PtC18H18N6Br2, PdC18H18N6Cl4.0.5H2O, PtC24H16N8Cl2.6CH3CN, RhC24H16N8Cl3.4.5H2O, Pd2C36H24N12(BF4)4.8H2O, PtC36H24N12Br2, PdC26H18N6Cl2.0.5H2O, PdC26H18N6Br2.H2O, PdC26H18N6Cl4.1.5H2O, PtC26H18N6Br2, PtC26H18N6Cl4, RhC26H18N6Cl3, PdC26H30N6Cl2, PdC26H30N6Br2.0.5H2O, PtC26H30N6Br2, PtC26H30N6Cl4.

However, the reaction of 2,6-diformylpyridine with dap afforded an open chain Schiff base complexes: Pd2C17H15N7Cl4.CH3CN.1.5H2O, Pd2C17H15N7Br4.0.5.

PhCN.3H2O and Pt2C17H15N7Cl8.PhCN.5H2O.

The isolated compounds are characterized on the basis of their melting points, elemental analyses, conductivity measurements, nuclear magnetic resonance, FTIR and electronic absorption spectra
