English Abstract

The internal flow in a cross-flow turbine is very complicated because the water passes through only a part of the runner.

Therefore, a 3D CFD flow simulation was performed to visualize the complicated flow nature.

The turbine was designed by using CATIA V5 and the analysis was performed using ANSYS CFX simulation code based on the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes Equations (RANS) with the Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model.

The flow field simulation includes the complete turbine.

The dimensions of the turbine are as follows; the number of blades (bn) is 30, the diameter ratio (21dd) is 0.65, the runner outer diameter (1d) is 0.3 m, the diameter of the shaft (sd) is 0.04 m and the nozzle entry arc (λ) is 90o.

The aim of this study is to improve the operation of the cross-flow turbine by establishing the optimum gap size (the gap size is the distance between the runner and the nozzle).

The flow visualization provided a good insight into the influence of the gap size on the performance of the turbine.

According to current study, the most effective gap size noticed was 2 mm where the efficiency was 77.564 %.

The CFD simulation results touched on an area of particular interest jointly outlined for further investigation by many researches in this field.
