English Abstract

This study comes to investigate a possibility of using the renewable energies within the Jordan Red-Dead Sea Project (JRSP).

The study began with an overview, as well as the reasons that called for this project from the environmental hazard facing the Dead Sea region due to fall in the level.

The research focused on the using of solar energy in order to operate the project pumps.

A complete methodology for designing an 1155MW ongrid PV system to operate the seawater pumping station that needs 2TWh/yr of electricity to pump 2000MCM/yr of seawater from Red Sea to Dead Sea.

The design include solar radiation calculations at Ma'an Airport (proposed site), then sizing and selection the PV system components which includes; the PV modules, the inverters, and cable sizing.

Economical analysis was applying to determine; the payback period is 7 years with annual saving US$620 million dollar and 1.288 million tones of CO2 emission saved.

The system capacity factor is 16.22%.

Ma'an Airport region was selected after evaluating all factors and influences that related with the proposed PV system for a long period (1983- 2012).

The annual averaged monthly insolation on a horizontal surface is 5.5kWh/m2.

The selected land is located at about 3.4 km south of the Ma'an Electrical Distribution Station.

The Jordanian government is the landowner.

On other hand, two recommended sites for two hydropower plants (at Fedan and Ghor Fifa) were intensive studied to select an efficient type of hydraulic turbines.

Optimal types are Pelton wheels with 93% of efficiency.

Six turbines were proposed, three in each plant, the total rating power for both plants are 249.51MW with annual energy yield is 2141.8GWh/yr and annual saving 1.379 million tones of CO2.
