English Abstract

The world has interested in the past few years in the field of positioning systems for mobile cellular systems.

The recommendations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), requires telecommunications companies to support the advantages of the cellular positioning, has helped in enhancing this development, which led to the proliferation and diversity.

Some examples and applications used in determining the location includes: manual triangulation, time of arrival, time difference of arrival and angle of arrival.

The smart antennas were found as a new technology to improve the spectrum efficiency of present and future wireless communications systems by exploiting the spatial domain.

Smart antennas allow networks to access the spatial information about the users, which used to estimate the locations of users more accurately than existing networks.

The angle of arrival (AOA) of the signal transmitted by mobile station are measured at several base stations (BSs) using an antenna array that can be used for positioning.

The major factor that affects the accuracy of an AOA positioning system is the angular resolution of the antennas used.

Which depends on the algorithms of antennas, which is based on smart antenna system.

Therefore, it is very important to investigate the application of different algorithms in the system location.

Studies have shown the possibility of achieving levels of accuracy from the rank of a few tens of meters, which meet the requirements of FCC, According to the type of algorithm used and the specifications of the antenna matrix and the type of wireless proliferation environment.

We have found in some results that some algorithms achieve the accuracy of 13 m in good conditions.

All the results obtained in this thesis are validated and demonstrated using both analytical and simulated techniques
