English Abstract

This paper presents the smart wall as an effective coverage control for indoor wireless services.

Here, a smart wall is a normal wall equipped with an Active Frequency Selective Surfaces (AFSSs) with a low cost Raspberry PI device.

In contrast to previous studies (Subrt, and Pechac, 2010) (Subrt, and Pechac, 2012) (Chang et al., 2008) which dealt with controlling the propagation of specific channels of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, this paper present AFSS elements with the capability to control propagation of all these bands' channels.

Therefore, they can totally transmit and/or block whole of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

In order to ensure that a smart wall takes a right decision in blocking or/and transmitting the desired signals within any building, many types of control systems has been proposed.

These systems are based on large computer networks and sensors (WiFEEB, 2014) (Subrt, and Pechac, 2014).

Therefore, they are considered expensive, complex, and not practical in multi floor building scenarios.

Instead of using these systems, a simple control system is proposed in this paper.

This system is based on location patterning technique.

Raspberry PI is the only required device for controlling the smart wall inside any building.

It replaces the computer networks and sensors as a result, the complexity and cost had decreased as compared to previous methods.

Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Microwave Studio (MWS) is used for testing the response of AFSS elements.

Remcom ‘Wireless InSite’ is used for showing how smart walls deal with the current demands of an indoor wireless system.

The concept of smart walls is described and evaluated based on a simple implementation of an arrangement of four smart walls in a single floor scenario.

Results are discussed in details, and typical characteristics of the aforementioned system are investigated.
