After its independence, Algeria experienced a considerable cultural vacuum, characterized by the spread of illiteracy and ignorance.

However, the young Algerian state, believing in the importance and role of education as being the basis of all development, began by mobilizing all the available resources at that time in spite of its difficult human and material situation.

It witnessed a doubling in the number of enrolled pupils which went beyond its capacities.

This led to the establishment of a new educational system characterised by arabisation and islamic features known as authentic education under the tutelage of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments.

This system was based on teaching the programs of the Ministry of Education in addition to a wide range of religious and Arabic language topics.
