Abstract EN

Objectives: This study aimed at: (1) to examine the problems faced by incarcerate؛ inmates in Jordan, and (2) to assess their socioeconomic and health needs.

Methodology: Data were collected via survey method from a nonrandom sample of 393 prison inmates.

Socio-demographic and incarceration conditions’ data were collected through a questionnaire designed for the present study.

Inmates’ n 1 re assessed through self-report assessment questions.

Results: The study Identi^ed It was found that prison inmates have a negative perception of the prison environment.

They complained from staff-inmate and inmate-inmate relationships.

In addition, inmates complain from the following: (1) inadequacy of visitations’ time and access to phone calls, (2) poor quality of premises and food, (3) health and mental health problems, (4) personal and family problems, (5) lack of educational and leisure activities, and (6) limited opportunities of vocational training and work.

On the issue of needs, inmates have various kinds of needs either during their incarceration, or when released from prison, and needs for their families.

It was found that inmates are in a dire need for: work and stable sources of income inside and outside prison, appropriate premises for visitations, increase visitations’ time, provide decent and healthy meals provide health insurance for their families.

In short, the results of this study highlight that prison experience is loaded with problems and incur more demands on inmates and their families.

It is recommended that prison staff should get more training on how to deal professionally with prisoners, and to increase the application of prisoners’ classi^cation and to categorize and house them accordingly, and to fulfill the reasonable needs of inmates and their families as resources permit.
