Abstract EN

The French occupation to Algeria (1830 AD / 1246 AH) has led to the emergence of a dangerous pattern of colonial containment and absorption especially in the cultural field.

Since it was followed - a few years later- by systematic campaigns aimed at the sources of the Algerian cultural heritage, led by explorers and orientalists, French and European, who raced to obtain whatever they could get from messages, anecdotes, maps and manuscripts to have it published and translated.

The Orientalist Frenchman Baron de Slane Baron De Slane (1801/1879 ) was one of those who loved occupied Algeria's libraries and vaults.

And so he wrote a detailed report on them in 1843.

It contained sixteen pages, and was named "A Guide to The Very Important Arabic Manuscripts in The Libraries of Algeria and Mr.

Hamouda in Constantine" as an outcome of what he considered as a scientific mission that he had accomplished in Algeria.

In addition to the collection and indexing operations De Slane was captivated by the translation and publishing movement.

And he did not hide the benefit he got from the great scripts to which he was given easy access by the occupying force.

Like: "Mokadimat Ibn Khaldun" (The Introduction of Ibn kKhaldoun), and "Morocco in The Tales of The African Country and Maghrib" ...

and other precious manuscripts that were extracted from our country by force, and they were destined to stay on shelves the French National Library in Paris to this present day.

This paper is trying to trace the effects of these most important Algerian manuscripts following their forced journey from their Algerian local sources to the facades of colonial presses and magazines, and how they contributed to the revival of modernist perceptions of private and public European French Orientalists.
