Abstract EN

The present work was carried out in Coniston village, a small village in England Lake District.

The village, the lake and the mountain have the same name, Coniston.

The area was popular with the tourists.

The present work was carried out to determine whether the water courses, in that area, were contaminated with faecal excreta, using coliform bacteria as an indicator.

Two techniques were used to determine the presence of coliform bacteria : (1) membrane filtration and (2) the most probable number (MPN) techniques.

The results from the two techniques were compared.

The results obtained was correlated to height.

The results from the two techniques used were not significantly different.

It was concluded that the water in the area is suitable for the recreational activities but not safe for drinking.
