Abstract EN

I have addressed in this research the role of Islamic schools (zawaya in plural and zawya singular) in maintaining the nation's identity.

Reference is especially made to Islamic schools in the region of Touat known as 'Zawya El Bikriya.

Such Zawaya have been one of the traditional institutions that observed the teaching of Koran, Islamic sciences and carried on the task of reconciliation in case of disputes between the members of Touat’s community.

The article finally illustrates that Zawaya’s role in both education and the reform cannot be denbied.
