Abstract EN

The article deals with the evolution of British colonial rule in the Gold Coast from the arrival of the British as merchants and evangelists by the seventeenth century until the fall of the whole territory of the Gold Coast under British control by the late nineteenth century.

The paper examines three main elements.

The first one deals with the arrival of the British and their gradual involvement in the local people’s affairs through the different administrations established on the spot to defend British interests.

The second element examines the reactions of the local people to British interference in their affairs.
