Taking mortgages to buy a residence in western countries : Bought a house on interest in the USA, what to do about already paid interest ?

alSalaam Alik With my sincere apologies, I meant to ask you on a financial matter. I bought my house in 1992 with a loan from a local bank. Although I paid it off quickly in five years I obviously paid interest on the loan. What should I do regarding the interest, I think I can find out how much it is ? Am I to pay Zakah on it ? At the time I did not know of Islamic banks in the U.S. nor did I research the issue. JAK for your patience with me
