This article has two sections.
The first one deals with the two concepts: interpretive reasoning (ijtihad) and renewal (tajdid), their importance and relevance to Prophetic Sunnah.
In the second section the author classifies the required ijtihad in the Prophetic Sunnah into five categories: creative ijtihad through application of new disciplines and sciences, ijtihad of renewal through revival of the Sunnah sciences, ijtihad in giving balance and preference, ijtihad in matters of application, and methodological ijtihad.
