English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effect of self-directed learning strategy on improving the reading skills of the ninth-grade students at Al- Mazar directorate of education.

To achieve the purpose of the study, the researcher prepared a plan for a series of lessons in based on self-directed strategy, as the researcher prepared a test to measure reading skills of ninth grade students, validity and reliability were ensured.

The sample of the study consisted of (40) students who were distributed into two groups; the experimental group which taught using the self-directed strategy and the control group which taught using the conventional method.

The results of the study showed that there was a statistically significant effect (α≤0.05) in favor of using self-directed learning strategy on the ninth grade students in improving reading skills.

Based on the finding of the study, the researcher suggested that further conducted studies in different conditions for longer time duration are recommended on other English language skills like speaking and writing skills are to be.
