English Abstract
pollutants that may be present in street dust sample, tree bark and leaves of Armstrong plant species in Tabouk city, KSA.
The main source of air pollution with heavy metals of Tabouk city is from traffic activities as no major industries located within the investigation area.
Air pollution with six heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, Fe and Cd) of Tabouk city was done by collecting dust samples from six sites in Tabouk city representing City center where traffic density is very high Residential area where traffic density is medium suburban located at north, south, east and west of Tabouk city A site from a remote site with very low traffic activities which was considered as a background or blank site.
The results showed that the highest concentration was found in street dust followed by tree bark then tree leaves.
The variation in concentration of most of the heavy metals determined from different sites decreases in an order represented as City center >Residential area >East suburb >North suburbs >South suburbs> west suburbs.
The heavy metals showed a variation that indicated that Fe >Mn> Zn >Ni > Cu > Cd, Iron (Fe) had the highest concentration in all the sampling areas with average range of 2439.3 to 5827.4 mg/kg for street dust and from 2967 to 4075 mg/kg for tree bark and from 78.5 to 110.7 mg/kg for tree leaves.
For Manganese (Mn) average range of 92.1 to 530.8 mg/kg for street dust and from 41 to 307 mg/kg for tree bark and from 11.1 to 52.7 mg/kg for tree leaves.
For Zinc (Zn) average range of 92.1 to 223.4 mg/kg for street dust and from 24.5 to 43.0 mg/kg for tree bark and from 11.3 to 14.2 mg/kg for tree leaves.
For (Ni) average range of 38.7 to 55.2 mg/kg for street dust and from 12.0 to 37.0 mg/kg for tree bark and from 1.49 to 2.32 mg/kg for tree leaves.
For copper (Cu) average range of 62.0 to 186.4 mg/kg for street dust and from 77 to 196.0 mg/kg for tree bark and from 0.04 to 2.95 mg/kg for tree leaves.
A lower value was observed for Cd where the average range of 5.5 to 6.6 mg/kg for street dust and from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg for tree bark and from 0.34 to 0.62 mg/kg for tree leaves.
The calculated results of I(geo) of heavy metals reveal the order of I(geo) are Zn>Cu> Mn > Fe > Ni > Cd.
The high I(geo) for Zn and Mn in street dusts indicate that there is more Zn and Mn pollution, which mainly originate from traffic activities especially through using of unleaded fuel.
The I(geo) and EF of Cd and Ni are low and the assessment results indicate an absence of distinct Cd and Ni pollution in street dusts.
The results found in the present study were compared with some cities around the world.
The levels of the metal ions found were generally below the mean worldwide contents of the street dust samples which was attributed to transportation of heavy metals with prevailing wind in the area.
