English Abstract

The historical conflict between Islam and the West reflects the argumentative aspects of the issue of fundamentalism between the two sides.

The political events during the twenty-first century, particularly the 9/11 incidents, forced the Western leaders to show their hidden hatred against Islam and Muslims.

The narratives that have been written on the 9/11 incidents in addition to some of the international literary works handled the new problems that had risen as a result like extremism, fundamentalism, and terrorism.

Therefore, this study offers a critical analysis of the issue of fundamentalism in two prominent literary works: Orhan Pamuk’s Snow and Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

Many critical works have been produced on the issue of fundamentalism from different angles.

This thesis tries to make use of the most relevant and recent of these critical works.

Thus, this study is divided into three chapters and a conclusion.

The first chapter consists of an introduction to the study of the issue of fundamentalism as one of the recent problems that was portrayed in literary works, especially the novel.

In the second and third chapters respectively, the issue of fundamentalism and the main characters are critically explored and compared as depicted in the two novels.

The studied novels present different aspects of the characters involved in the issue of fundamentalism, chaos, extremism and terrorism.

Finally, the conclusion puts forward the findings and results of the discussions of the previous three chapters.

The method used throughout the work can be described as textual and critical relying on the novels as primary sources and other secondary sources casting additional light on the topic of the work
