A spectrophotometric method is proposed for the determination of mesalamine drug in their pure forms and in pharmaceutical formulations, based on the product formation reaction with 9-chloroacridine (9-CA).
The molar absorptivity values are 1.8×103 L.mol-1.cm-1 and the lower limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) are 1.8733 and 5.676 μg/ml respectively.
The stoichiometry of the drug-9-CA product was found to be 1:1.
The procedure is characterised by its simplicity with good accuracy and precision and no interference was observed from common pharmaceutical excipients.
The proposed method was applied successfully for the determination of mesalamine in their pharmaceutical formulations and the obtained results were statistically compared with those given by the official method.
